In December 2020, both wind and solar energy yields were weak. Germany achieved 92 percent of the average for solar, and only 74 percent for wind. "Nevertheless, renewable energies are right on target for the year as a whole", says Markus W. Voigt, CEO of the aream Group.
"December was another weaker month for renewables", says Voigt. In Italy, only 89 percent of the solar target was achieved, while Spain came at least close to the expected energy yield with 96 percent. "This shows that investors should not focus on just one location, but rather invest in renewable energies as broadly diversified as possible", says Voigt. By diversifying within a portfolio, regional and temporal fluctuations balance out well.
For example, renewables end 2020 at 101 percent of target for wind and exactly 100 percent for solar. A portfolio of different energy sources with different locations manages this smoothing. Voigt: "The investable universe in renewables continues to grow as an entire industry forms around the classics of solar or wind farms."
"The CleanTech sector is growing tremendously, with many of the new companies still very young and quite small," says Voigt. "These startups are usually not listed on the stock exchange and thus only investable via private equity vehicles." However, there are already some interesting IPOs coming up in the next few months, and overall, the sector should grow significantly.
