A Rainy August
13 Sept 2021, 09:57

First, a low-pressure system spread over the British Isles, then polar air also came to Germany: August was relatively cool, wet and sunless. Nevertheless, the solar plants were able to achieve their target values. The energy harvest from wind power was also almost on target. "It remains the same: When investing in renewable energies, diversification is the key to smooth-out fluctuations", says Markus W. Voigt, CEO of aream Group.

In August, the sun shone rather rarely in Germany, and the average temperature of 16.4 degrees Celsius was significantly below the historical comparative values. In addition, rainfall increased by almost 30 percent. Nevertheless, production from solar energy in Germany made a precision landing at one hundred percent of the target value. Spain fared worse, achieving only 87 percent. In Italy, on the other hand, the target was exceeded by four percentage points.

The wind blew more strongly again in August than in the previous month. The German plants achieved 95 percent of their target values. Since the beginning of the year, they are now 15 percentage points below their target.

Weather cannot be reliably predicted and therefore remains a factor of uncertainty in renewable energy production. "However, the resulting investment risk can be managed", says Voigt. After all, if you invest in different locations and forms of energy, you can assume that regional or short-term fluctuations will even out in the end.
